Winnipeg/Selkirk, MB – The 2009 TELUS Cup is only three weeks away and the possibility of two Winnipeg teams vying for the national midget championship is a distinct reality.
Already named as the Host Team for the tournament, the Winnipeg Thrashers will make their second straight appearance at the prestigious event, which is slated for the Selkirk Recreation Complex, April 20-26, after finishing as silver medallists last year in Arnprior, Ontario.
Meanwhile the Winnipeg Wild, the 2008-09 Manitoba Midget AAA Hockey League Champions, will try to earn their way into the tournament as the Western Region representatives. The Wild will compete in the AAA Midget Regionals this weekend and the winner will represent the Western Region at the TELUS Cup.
Tournament ticket packages for this year’s TELUS Cup are available through Hockey Manitoba, Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association, Keystone Sports (Selkirk) and Ticketmaster for just $79.00. That’s 19 games at just $4.15 per game!
Hockey Manitoba has announced a $5.00 discount off all full tournament ticket packages purchased at the Hockey Manitoba or Winnipeg Minor Hockey offices. Individuals will also have their names entered into special draws for great prizes.
In addition, the Host Committee has announced a Super 7 Weekend Pass for only $49.00 consisting of three round robin games (Wpg Thrashers vs. West, West vs. Central and Wpg Thrashers vs. Quebec) as well as all four weekend games (Semi Finals 1 & 2, Bronze and Gold Medal Games). Single games tickets for the event will not go on sale until the first day of the tournament on April 20 and will be available only at the Selkirk Recreation Complex for sale. Single game tickets will be $8.00 for adults (or $10.00 for premier evening games) during the round robin and $2.00 for children 12 and under.

This is the 30th anniversary of the tournament and only the third time in its history that Manitoba has hosted the event, with the last time in the Winnipeg region dating back to 1979. Six teams from across the country will vie for national supremacy from 150 teams AAA teams coast to coast. The 2009 TELUS Cup will also leave a legacy of financial support for minor hockey in the capital region and Province of Manitoba.
