50th Annual Western Canadian Shield Championship, April 7-10

Winnipeg, MB -The Western Canadian Shield Host Committee in association with Hockey Manitoba is proud to announce that the 50th Annual Western Canadian Shield Senior Women’s Hockey Championships will be played in Winnipeg, Manitoba April 7-10, 2011. The Championship will be hosted at the Jonathan Toews Arena, formerly Dakota Community Club.

For 50 years The Western Shield Senior Women’s Hockey Championship has brought together the top female teams from Western Canada for elite competition. It is the longest running women’s hockey championship in Canada. This year the tournament celebrates the last 50 unbroken years.

Brenda Dubeck, Chair of the 2011 Western Canadian Shield Host Committee said, “We are looking forward to an excellent weekend of hockey. Many of the teams competing this year are returning to this championship and have won medals of many colors over the years. For those fans of hockey that have not recently had the opportunity to experience live senior female hockey I encourage you to come to the rink and see hockey played in its purest form. Many of the players have competed in both Canadian and US college hockey, returning to play at home after their collegiate years. ”

The Western Shield brings together elite senior female players competing on teams from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia. There are two divisions of play, Senior A and B. This year Manitoba will be sending 4 teams to represent our Province, two teams in each division of play. Representing in the “A” Division are the Maple Leafs who are the gold medal winners at the recently completed Provincial Championships. As well Manitoba will be represented by the Herd who won the silver medal. In the “B” Division Manitoba will be well represented by the Western Predators, gold medal winners at Provincials, and the Western Shield defending gold medal champions from 2010 the Aces, who won Provincial silver this year.

Competition begins on Thursday, April 7 in the late afternoon and continues with games scheduled all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday. All four medal games will be played on Sunday.

The 50th Annual 2011 Western Shield Senior Women’s Hockey Championship takes place April 7-10, 2011 in Winnipeg and features:

• 4 days of competition

• 10 elite teams

• 24 exciting games

• 50 years’ tradition

• 300 participants

• 12,000 potential fans
