KASPICK NAMED WHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League announced today that Brandon Wheat Kings forward Tanner Kaspick has been named the WHL Player of the Week for the week ending May 8th, 2016.

Kaspick notched the game winner for the Brandon Wheat Kings in Game 1 of the 2016 WHL Championship Series against the Seattle Thunderbirds on Friday, May 6th at Westman Place.

Overtime was required in Game 1 of the WHL Championship Series as the score was tied at two goals apiece between the Brandon Wheat Kings and the Seattle Thunderbirds. At the 6:22 mark of the extra frame, Kaspick netted the overtime winner to give the Wheat Kings a 3-2 victory and a 1-0 series cushion. The goal by Kaspick marked his fifth of the post-season and his heroics were enough to land him first star honours.

The 18-year-old native of Brandon, MB recorded 31 points (13g-18a) to go along with a plus-15 rating in 53 regular season contests. Furthermore, Kaspick was named the 2016 WHL Scholastic Player of the Year at the WHL Awards Luncheon last week in Calgary.  The 6-1, 202 lb forward is in his second WHL campaign with Brandon and has amassed 50 points (15g-35a) in 107 career WHL regular season contests.

The WHL has also nominated Jordan Papirny of the Brandon Wheat Kings for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week award. Papirny, a 1996-born netminder from Edmonton, AB posted a record of 2-0-0-0 with a 1.80 goals against average and a .944 save percentage. On Friday, May 6th, Papirny was solid as turned aside 31 shots to help guide the Wheat Kings to a 3-2 overtime victory in Game 1 of the 2016 WHL Championship Series against the Seattle Thunderbirds. Papirny was named the game’s second star for his performance. The following night, Papirny kept up his consistent level of play as he claimed third star honours after a 37 save outing in a 3-2 overtime victory against the Thunderbirds in Game 2.  Currently in his third WHL campaign with Brandon, Papirny has posted a 98-42-12-7 record with a 2.85 goals against average and a .907 save percentage with 12 shutouts in 162 career WHL regular season appearances.
