Calgary, AB – The Western Hockey League announced today that Kelowna Rockets’ defenceman Madison Bowey is the WHL Player of the Week for the week ending October 5, 2014.

Bowey scored two goals and added six assists for eight points while posting a plus-seven rating in three games over the past week, helping the Rockets to three wins in that span.

On Wednesday, October 1, Bowey recorded two goals and three assists for a five-point outing while also earning first star honours in a 7-5 victory over the visiting Vancouver Giants. On Friday, October 3, Bowey chipped in two assists, including setting up the overtime game-winning goal, as the Rockets edged the Silvertips 5-4 in Everett, WA. On Saturday, October 4, Bowey notched an assist in a 6-4 road victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Bowey, a 19-year-old product of Winnipeg, MB, is in his fourth season in the Western Hockey League with the Kelowna Rockets. The Rockets’ captain has enjoyed a great start to the 2014-15 season, recording 11 points through his first four games. In 205 career regular season games, Bowey has amassed 43 goals and 123 points along with a plus-97 rating. He was selected in the second round, 53rd overall, by the Washington Capitals in the 2013 NHL Draft.

The WHL has also nominated Zach Sawchenko of the Moose Jaw Warriors for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week award. The 17-year-old from Calgary, AB, posted back-to-back shutouts in two appearances over the past week, stopping all 55 shots he faced over the two games as the Warriors managed a 2-0-0-1 record in that span. On Thursday, October 2, Sawchenko turned aside all 30 shots he faced to record his first career WHL shutout and was named the game’s 1st Star in a 3-0 victory over the visiting Red Deer Rebels. On Saturday, October 4, Sawchenko turned in a 25-save effort to notch his second straight shutout while earning first star honours in a 5-0 triumph over the visiting Tri-City Americans. Selected by Moose Jaw with the 33rd overall pick in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, Sawchenko is in his second campaign in the WHL, and has posted 12 victories in 31 career appearances. Sawchenko is eligible for the 2016 NHL Draft.
