Manitoba represented well at 2009 NHL Entry Draft in Montreal

Scott Glennie (Winnipeg) was the first Manitoban player to be taken in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft as he was selected 8th overall by the Dallas Stars. Glennie is a product of the Brandon Wheat Kings and went through the Hockey Manitoba Program of Excellence in 2008 to become a member of the Bronze medal winning Team West at the World U-17 Challenge.

Cody Eakin (Winnipeg) was taken in the 3rd round, 85th overall, by the Washignton Capitals. Eakin, a forward from the Swift Current Broncos, was also apart of the 2008 Bronze medal winning Team West.

Byron Froese (Winkler) was selected 4th round, 119th overal, by the Chicago Blackhawks. Froese is another forward who plays for the Everett Silvertips.

Brandon Wheat Kings superstar, Brayden Schenn, was drafted 5th overall by the Los Angeles Kings. Schenn is a native of Saskatoon, SK and was a linemate with Scott Glennie this past season.

Winnipeg-born, Carter Ashton, son of former Winnipeg Jet – Brent Ashton was selected in the 1st round, 29th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ashton’s hometown is Saskatoon, SK and is a member of the Lethbridge Hurricanes.
