MATT COOKE NAMED TO TEAM CANADA 2004 IIHF MEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ROSTER SET AT 23 FOR CANADA

CALGARY, AB – Team Canada General Manager, Jim Nill, along with Team Canada Assistant GM Don Maloney (NY Rangers) and Director, Player Personnel Lanny McDonald named Vancouver Canucks forward Matt Cooke to Team Canada’s roster for the 2004 World Championship.

The 2004 World Championship takes place in Prague, Czech Republic, April 24-May 9, 2004. Canada will open the Championship on April 25th versus Austria.

With the naming of Cooke, Canada’s roster stands at 23 players, the maximum allowed by the IIHF for the start of the championship (three goaltenders, seven defensemen and thirteen forwards).

Cooke had 23 points with the Canucks during the 2003-2004 season, playing in 53 games. In 7 playoff games versus Calgary, Cooke had 3 goals and 1 assist, ranking him fourth in Canucks playoff scoring.

Joel Quenneville is Team Canada’s Head Coach, while Mike Babcock (Mighty Ducks of Anaheim) and Tom Renney (New York Rangers) are the assistant coaches.

Canada played a tune up game on Thursday in Prague versus the Czech Republic, losing by the score of 8-5.

The official broadcaster of the Hockey Canada, TSN/RDS, will have live TV coverage of the Men’s Worlds, beginning with Canada’s first game of the championship on April 25.
