MFMHL reflects on a succesful inaugural season, now looks ahead to 2009/10

In early March the first ever Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League (MFMHL) Championship was awarded to the Pembina Valley Hawks when they defeated the Eastman Selects 2-0 in a best-of-three series. Pembina Valley also finished top spot in the regular season with a record of 13-2-1.

League President, Bert Dow reflects on a positive season, "the MFMHL has been an evolution of hard work and perseverance from many individuals involved since its inception. This season there were 5 Midget AA female Regional teams involved."

2008/09 MFMHL teams: Brandon, Central Plains, Eastman, Pembina Valley, Yellowhead

Each team played a 16 game schedule along with some teams participating in an exhibition schedule with the Winnipeg Midget AA league. Dow explains that "teams within the MFMHL would like to see movement towards an interlocking schedule with the Winnipeg AA league and we will be pursuing this option moving forward."

The league’s initial goal is to provide female midget players the opportunity to play an elite level of hockey within their Hockey Manitoba Region, similar to Midget AAA in the male circuit. The MFMHL has laid a great foundation in doing so, as it looks as though the league will be a great developmental program for years to come. Dow finishes by saying, "the league by all accounts was an over whelming success, a poll of the teams expressed that all enjoyed the competition andare looking forward to next season."
