The Hockey Manitoba Wind-Up

by Ezra Ginsburg  |  April 20, 2020 2:15 pm

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of the 2019 – 2020 hockey season, many teams across the province were unable to hold team wind-ups, parties and year-end celebrations to commemorate their hockey seasons.

To make up for the wind-ups that teams weren’t able to have in person (and to bring some joy during these difficult times!), Hockey Manitoba is launching a province wide initiative for hockey teams to celebrate their seasons.  This initiative will take place using video conferencing applications such as Zoom, Skype and Google Hangouts in lieu of being able to get together in person as a team.

This Saturday April 25th, we are encouraging teams in Manitoba to organize a team wind-up via video conferencing.  The Hockey Manitoba Wind-Up will allow teams to get together virtually to celebrate their 2019 – 2020 hockey seasons.

Hockey Manitoba is excited to announce that teams can now register online for this Saturday’s Hockey Manitoba Wind-Up (April 25th) for a chance to have a local celebrity pop in during their teams virtual wind-up!

Enter to win by filling out the Online Registration Form below.

As part of The Hockey Manitoba Wind-Up, we are encouraging teams to hold their Team Awards Ceremonies virtually.  This is a great opportunity to highlight a unique contribution made by each player on your team.  Some examples of awards categories that can be used are Most Valuable, Most Improved, Best Team Player, Best Forward, Best Defence, etc.  Awards will empower both players and coaches and allow all team members to look back on the fun and positive memories of the season. Below is a downloadable Hockey Manitoba Award Certificate Template that can be filled out easily and sent out to players via e-mail or text.

The idea behind The Hockey Manitoba Wind-Up is for teams to come together, have fun and celebrate their hockey seasons but we have also suggested a few activities that can be incorporated to enhance the team wind-ups:

  • Quiz / trivia night over video – We have put together The Hockey Manitoba Wind-Up Quiz Game that teams can use for their virtual wind-ups.
  • Watch parties – choose a hockey or sports themed movie or a classic hockey game for the team to watch together
  • Wear Your Team Jersey/ Favourite NHL Jersey – have players on the team wear their team jerseys (if they have not been returned) or alternatively each player wears their favourite jersey or team hoodie
  • Play a game together (i.e. Pictionary, Heads Up, Scavenger Hunt)
  • Learn or create a team dance and post it on TikTok
  • Hold a team workout – Pick a few fun stretches or exercises that the team can do together

During The Hockey Manitoba Wind-Up, we encourage teams to post short videos or photos of their video conferencing calls on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #TheHockeyMBWindUp and tag Hockey Manitoba.  Throughout the day, our Hockey Manitoba social media accounts will highlight wind-ups that are taking place throughout the province.

We encourage teams that may have already held wind-ups virtually through video conferencing to share images or videos from those calls and tag Hockey Manitoba on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

It is important to note that for minor hockey teams (5 – 17 years old), Hockey Manitoba recommends that virtual wind-ups be organized by a team manager, coach or parent. (For reference, please see Hockey Manitoba’s social media policy).

We are looking forward to seeing teams participate in The Hockey Manitoba Wind-Up as we come together to celebrate the 2019 – 2020 hockey season!
