How do I become a Hockey Manitoba Official?
First and foremost you need to be the right age! Officials must be 13 years old by December 31st of the current season. Next you have to certify. Hockey Manitoba’s certification season for officials runs from September through to late November.
What courses do I have to take to become an Official?
All NEW officials are required to take Hockey University Officiating 1/2 AND must attend an in-person clinic which is comprised of 4 hours of classroom instruction followed by a 1 hour ice session. All of these components must be fully completed to be certified for the current season. Level II officials are also required to take the Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders.
Where do I register for an officiating clinic?
Officials are required to register for certification clinics through a Hockey Canada eHockey account. Select the appropriate level located at the bottom of the page to proceed with registration information. Please note: Visa and MasterCard are the only payment methods accepted.
Do I have to certify every year?
YES! It is essential that an official continue to update and be completely familiar with new rule interpretations and officiating techniques. Therefore attendance at an in-person each season is required. Level I officials who have completed the Hockey University Officiating 1/2 online course are not required to repeat the on-line course in year 2. However it is recommended that Level I officials continuing in year 2 revisit the program prior to their in-person clinic until they advance to Level II at the age of 16.
I am 18 + years old a do I have to start at Level I?
No! Individuals NEW to the officiating program, and 18 years of age or older, may move directly into Level II provided the following requirements are met:
- Must complete the Hockey Canada Officiating Program Online – HU-Officiating 1/2
- Must attend a Level II clinic (5 hours) of which 1 hour is a mandatory ice session
- Must complete Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders
- Must obtain at least 70% on the national exam
How much does it cost to be an official?
A new Level I official will pay: $23.00 (+GST) for the Hockey University Officiating 1/2 online course, an annual registration fee of $85.00 (+GST) and $12.00 for the Hockey Manitoba and Hockey Canada crests. Cost for a new Level I official is approximately $125.00. Cost for a Level I official in year two is reduced to $85.00 (+GST).
Do I need any equipment?
All Officials require the following: black helmet with visor, whistle, officiating jersey and black pants.
Where do I place the crests?
The Hockey Manitoba crest is to be placed on the left breast and the Hockey Canada crest on the left shoulder.
Once I finish all my certification will someone call me to work games?
Officials are encourage to contact his/her minor hockey association Referee-in Chief and Regional Referee Coordinator to let them know that their certification is complete. Below is a list of contacts for the upcoming season.
