Growing the Game

The promotion of grassroots hockey is a core organizational objective of Hockey Manitoba. We believe that everyone has the right to play hockey barrier free, and we are committed to making the game more accessible and inclusive for all.

The key objective with Growing the Game is the promotion of grassroots hockey initiatives around Manitoba and the development of accessible, meaningful, and fun programs that let people fall in love with the game.

Moreover, we are committed to fostering positive relationships with like-minded organizations and engaging youth in communities across the province through initiatives such as our Under-7 Face-Off Festivals and Girls Hockey United celebration.

Connections will be established with new and existing hockey players and their families, with a renewed focus on working with marginalized communities while creating opportunities for growth in all facets of the game, including coaching and officiating.

A major principle of Grow the Game will be to always focus on WHY we play sports. By developing programs that are meaningful and accessible, we will create spaces that allow one to think differently about the game of hockey and make it fun and welcoming for all.

Hockey Manitoba Grassroots Initiatives

Listed below are large-scale grassroots initiatives that Hockey Manitoba currently operates or helps support. Here, we focus primarily on U7, U9, and U11 development and community engagement. These programs are meaningful and fun, and we hope to create inclusive learning spaces that foster a desire to play and stay in the game of hockey.

Over the past several seasons, successful Breakfast Club programs initiated by Hockey Manitoba’s Coach Mentorship program have emerged across the province. Breakfast Clubs provide additional skill development for players prior to their school day with participants taking part in an on-ice development session followed by a nutritional breakfast.

Hockey Manitoba will provide $250 grants to all associations or community clubs that develop a new and sustainable Breakfast Club program in 2019-20.  $100 will be granted to all established Breakfast Clubs. Existing breakfast clubs will need to re-apply each season in order to receive funding.
