TIPS & SKILLS WITH RYAN GALLOWAY
Featuring NHL Linesman Ryan Galloway of Winnipeg, MB

Hockey Manitoba is pleased to promote another unique official development initiative for the 2012-13 season with Ryan Galloway, NHL linesman and Hockey Manitoba alumni. Last season the Hockey Manitoba website featured a monthly article called "The Galloway Report" which provided insight into the day-to-day life of an NHL official. This season Galloway will once again give back to Hockey Manitoba officials with a "Tips & Skills" initiative which will allow officials the opportunity to directly email Ryan to ask development questions about officiating. Officials will visit the Hockey Manitoba website to email Ryan and will also be able to view Q & A highlights along with periodic video responses.

"Hello officials and members of Hockey Manitoba, I would like to begin by thanking everyone that followed my stories of "Life as an NHL Official" last season. It was a pleasure to give you an insight of what it is like in the NHL, from the aspect of life on the road, to different arenas and of course reliving opening night in Winnipeg. From the feedback I was given, it was entertaining for you and gave you a different perspective.

This year, we are going to try something a little different and something I am excited to undertake. I would like to hear from you. On the Hockey Manitoba site, you will find an email address where I can be reached. My plan is to take questions from officials and the membership and answer them. Our goal is at least once a month, but as time permits, perhaps more questions can be answered.

Feel free to ask questions about officiating, the role of officials in the game and the mindset we have at the amateur and professional level. For obvious professional reasons, I can't entertain questions regarding specific players, coaches or specific incidents that happen during the season. However, I believe this can be a great forum to answer questions to help in the development of officials and the program in general.

I look forward to hearing from officials as well as the entire membership. So ask away!

All the best for a great season!"

Best regards,

Ryan Galloway
NHL Linesman #82

Approved at the Hockey Canada Annual General Meeting this past May in Calgary, Hockey Canada’s new head contact rule will be introduced with zero tolerance enforcement in a plan to cut down on the number of head injuries suffered in hockey. Hockey Manitoba and the 12 other Hockey Canada branches will put the new rule in effect immediately, beginning at the start of the 2011-12 season. Hockey Manitoba Executive Director, Peter Woods, comments; “the focus of the new head contact rule is to ensure player accountability...it is the obligation and responsibility of Hockey Manitoba to provide all members with the confidence that they are being protected within the rules of the game and to minimize risk.”
