Hockey Manitoba announces POE TOP-40 Camp rosters
WINNIPEG, MB – Hockey Manitoba is pleased to announce the Under-16 & Under-18 rosters for the Program of Excellence (POE) TOP-40 Camp to be held May 9-12, 2013 in Portage la Prairie at PCU Centre. The POE TOP-40 Camp is the second major phase of the Program of Excellence which is the selection process for the 2013 U-16 (Male) and U-18 (Female) Team Manitoba rosters. The TOP-40 Camp rosters have been finalized following the U-16 and U-18 POE Spring Tournaments held simultaneously March 28-30, 2013 in Winnipeg at Jonathan Toews Community Centre.
A total of forty-two players have been invited to the U-16 camp, comprised of four (4) goalies, fourteen (14) defensemen, and twenty-four (24) forwards. Following a competitive POE Spring Tournament which featured a total of 136 of the province’s best 1998 born (male) players the coach and evaluation staff had the duty of making many tough decisions to cut down to the forty player range. The POE TOP-40 Camp roster will feature a large amount of Western Hockey League draft picks later this week, in addition it is anticipated that a number of players who were not invited to the POE TOP-40 Camp will also receive a call from the Western Hockey League during the draft.

The Under-18 list features six (6) players from the 2012 U-18 Team Manitoba roster who earned silver at the 2012 U-18 Nationals; Carswell, Grossi, Keen, Krzyszczyk, Lemoine, C.Oswald. Stephanie Grossi and Danielle Krzyszczyk have also been invited to attend the U-18 Team Canada Strength & Conditioning Camp held May 1-5 in Toronto, ON.

The POE Top-40 Camp was formerly known as the POE Summer Camp, however in an effort to streamline programming towards the philosophies of the Sport Canada Long-Term Athlete Development Model and Hockey Canada’s Long-Term Player Development Model the camp was moved to May as of 2011. Historically POE summer camps have taken place in June or July, which essentially forced young players to continue to participate in high-intensity summer hockey teams/tournaments as opposed to using those months as an important resting and training period off the ice. The POE TOP-40 Camp is an integral piece in determining not only the short list of skill & talent for Team Manitoba but also a significant importance is placed on team building, off-ice behaviour, and estimating individual character and leadership qualities.
