Hockey Manitoba introduces Garth Loeppky as new Referee-in-Chief
WINNIPEG – Hockey Manitoba is pleased to introduce Garth Loeppky as the new Director of Officiating for the organization. Garth replaces Ian Heather who had been the Referee-in-Chief since January 2002, serving as one of the organization's most dedicated individuals over his 9 year tenure. Loeppky comments on his recent appointment, "this is another opportunity to put back into a program that has helped me develop both personally and professionally. I am looking forward to assisting our officials, instructors and mentors with their skill development, support and performance management."
Garth Loeppky born in Morden, MB spent his youth years in Portage la Prairie where he finished his minor hockey career as captain of the Central Plains Capitals (Midget AAA). Garth attended the University of Manitoba and graduated with a Physical Education degree with a minor in Psychology. In 1996 Loeppky began officiating which led on to a prestige career of wearing stripes that included four seasons with the WHL and twelve seasons with the IHL and AHL. Along the way Loeppky has also been assigned with numerous high profile games within Hockey Manitoba and Hockey Canada including the MJHL, ANAVET Cup, Royal Bank Cup, World Jr.A Challenge, World U-17 Hockey Challenge, and more. Garth completed his Level VI certification, the highest obtainable under the Hockey Canada program, in 2005.
As part of the new Officials structure that Hockey Manitoba continues to develop, the Referee-in-Chief title has evolved to Director of Officiating.
