MANITOBA’S TOP PROSPECTS DESCEND ON BRANDON

by Hockey Manitoba  |  May 25, 2004 12:12 pm

Hockey Manitoba is pleased to release the names of the 40 male and 40 female players (plus injury exemptions) who have been selected to attend the June 25 to June 27, 2004 Program of Excellence Camp. The Keystone Center in Brandon, Manitoba will be the site for this summer evaluation camp. (Rosters and camp agenda attached.)

The male players are the top 16-year-olds in Manitoba (players born in 1988). “These are some of the best athletes we have had in recent years and we believe we will be able to provide 11 players from Manitoba that will be an integral part of the 2005 Team Western squad” Head Coach Lyle Loewen affirmed. Loewen, originally from Arborg, is currently the Head Coach of the Southeast Blades of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. He will act as head coach of the Manitoba portion of the program and will be an assistant coach with Team Western.

Eleven players from Manitoba and eleven from Saskatchewan will be chosen to form TEAM WESTERN, who will compete at the 2005 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge in Lethbridge, Alberta from December 27, 2004 to January 4, 2005. TEAM WESTERN will compete in this tournament that will feature top representation from across the hockey world, which include Russia, Czech Republic, Finland and the U.S.A.

The female program will be icing a full team of players born 1987, 1988 and 1989. The head coach of this years’ team is Jill Mathez from Winnipeg. Jill brings extensive knowledge in the female game with her experience as head coach of The University of Winnipeg and her experience in past Hockey Manitoba Programs. Jill will be joined by Assistant Coaches Art Coulombe of St. Malo and Keri Yackel from West St. Paul.

The female team (TEAM MANITOBA) will compete in the National Under 18 Championship in February 2005. The exact date and location of this tournament has not been confirmed at this time.

This is the first evaluation for the Hockey Canada scouts to evaluate these players for inclusion in the national team programs. A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THESE YOUNG ATHLETES!
