Dominion City’s Denton Mateychuk (Eastman Selects Midget AAA, Moose Jaw Warriors) will represent Canada at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games, coming up from January 18 – January 22 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The 15-year-old defenceman is the lone Manitoban on Canada’s 17-player roster which includes two goaltenders, six defencemen and nine forwards. Strathclair’s Conor Geekie (Yellowhead Chiefs Midget AAA, Winnipeg Ice) was originally named to Team Canada’s roster back on December 16th but he is unable to attend due to an illness.

Mateychuk was a key member of Hockey Manitoba’s U-16 Program of Excellence team that won Silver at the 2019 WHL Cup in Calgary. Mateychuk tied for 2nd in tournament scoring with 7 points (3 goals, 4 assists) in five games and was named to the Tournament All Star team along with Geekie.

Mateychuk recently played six games with the Moose Jaw Warriors as an emergency call-up and picked up his first career WHL goal along with an assist. The Warriors chose Mateychuk with the 11th overall pick of the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft.

Canada, which won silver at the 2016 Youth Olympics, will face Russia (Jan. 18) and Denmark (Jan. 19) in Group B play during the preliminary round, with the semifinals set for Jan. 21 and the bronze and gold medal games on Jan. 22.
