Travis Hamonic (St. Malo) named WHL Player of the Week
CALGARY, AB – The BOSTON PIZZA WHL Player of the Week is defenceman Travis Hamonic of the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Hamonic picked up four points, scoring two goals and two assists to go with a +3 rating in three games over the last week, helping the Brandon Wheat Kings win their 2010 Husky WHL Eastern Conference Semi-Final best-of-seven series over the Saskatoon Blades 4-2 and earn a split on the road in their opening two games of the Eastern Conference Championship versus the Calgary Hitmen.
In game six of the Eastern Conference Semi-Final versus the Saskatoon Blades on Monday, April 12th, Hamonic picked up one assist as the Wheaties downed the Blades 5-4 to advance to the Eastern Conference Championship versus the Calgary Hitmen. In game one on Friday, April 16th at the Pengrowth Saddledome in Calgary, Hamonic scored a goal, added an assist and was named the games 1st Star in the Wheat Kings 4-2 series opening win over the Hitmen. The following evening, Saturday, April 17th, Hamonic scored once and was named the games 3rd Star in the Wheat Kings 3-2 over-tome loss to the Hitmen.
The 2010 Husky WHL Eastern Conference Championship series is tied 1-1 and now shifts to Brandon for games three and four on Tuesday, April 20th and Wednesday, April 21st at 7:00pm CT. For ticket information visit www.whl.ca/tickets.
Hamonic, a 19 year old from Winnipeg, Manitoba, is currently playing his fourth season in the Western Hockey League. The 2008 2nd round draft pick of the New York Islanders, was originally selected in the 9th round of the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft by the Moose Jaw Warriors. A member of Team Canada at the 2010 World Junior Championship, Hamonic was recently named to the WHL Eastern Conference 2nd All Star Team.
The WHL has also nominated Drew Owsley of the Tri-City Americans for the CHL Goaltender of the Week Award. Owsley posted a 1-1-0-0 record this past week with one shut-out, stopping 45 of 49 shots faced for a 2.010 goals-against average and 0.918 save percentage. Owsley, a native of Lethbridge, Alberta, finished the regular season 5th among WHL goaltenders with a 2.51 GAA and posted a 33-11-1-1 record.
