WINNIPEG, MB- Hockey Manitoba is honoured to announce that two officials have been selected for the 2013 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, held December 29th – January 5th in Victoriaville/Drummondville, Quebec. Trevor Peluk (Winnipeg) has been selected to work the event as a referee, and Andrew Stammers (Winnipeg) will attend as a linesman.

Peluk is a Level 5 official who currently referees games in the CIS, MJHL, KJHL, MMJHL and Midget AAA league. Stammers is a Level 4 official, and currently works the lines in the WHL, CIS, MJHL, KJHL, MMJHL, along with refereeing Midget AAA hockey. Both officials are also instructors and mentors within the Hockey Manitoba Officials Program. Peluk and Stammers previously attended the Western Officials Program of Excellence (OPOE) Camp, which is a requirement in order to be selected to the World U-17 Hockey Challenge. Peluk attended as a referee in 2010 and the following season in 2011 Stammers attended as a linesman.

The World Under-17 Hockey Challenge is a prestigious international event, hosted by Hockey Canada, the event gives the stars of tomorrow the chance to showcase their skills on an international stage for the first time. Since the first World Under-17 Hockey Challenge (then known as the Québec Esso Cup) in 1986, more than 1,100 NHL draft picks have played in the tournament, including 9 of the last 10 first-overall selections in the NHL draft; Ilya Kovalchuk, 2001; Rick Nash, 2002; Marc-André Fleury, 2003; Alexander Ovechkin, 2004; Erik Johnson, 2006; Patrick Kane, 2007; John Tavares, 2009; Taylor Hall, 2010; Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 2011. Given the calibre of play at this event annually, it's easy to imagine how special the development opportunity is for the officials assigned to work the tournament.

Hockey Manitoba is pleased to promote another unique official development initiative for the 2012-13 season with Ryan Galloway, NHL linesman and Hockey Manitoba alumni. Last season the Hockey Manitoba website featured a monthly article called "The Galloway Report" which provided insight into the day-to-day life of an NHL official. This season Galloway will once again give back to Hockey Manitoba officials with a "Tips & Skills" initiative which will allow officials the opportunity to directly email Ryan to ask development questions about officiating. Officials will visit the Hockey Manitoba website to email Ryan and will also be able to view Q & A highlights along with periodic video responses. Galloway quotes; " This year, we are going to try something a little different and something I am excited to undertake… I believe this can be a great forum to answer questions to help in the development of officials and the program in general."
