WINNIPEG, MB – Hockey Manitoba is pleased to announce the Under-16 players who have been selected to attend the Program of Excellence (POE) Top-40 Camp, held May 26-29, 2011 in Winnipeg. The U-16 players selected to attend the POE Top-40 have advanced from the pool of 136 players who competed at the POE Spring Tournament which was held April 1-3, 2011.The POE Top-40 Camp is the third phase of the Program of Excellence which is the selection process for the U-16 Team Manitoba roster that will compete at the 2011 Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup in Swift Current, SK.

The POE Top-40 Camp was formerly known as the POE Summer Camp, however in an effort to streamlineprogramming towards the philosophies of the Sport Canada Long-Term Athlete Development Model the camp has been moved earlier in the year to May. Past summer camps have traditionally taken place in June or July, which essentially forced young players to continue to participate in high-intensity summer hockey programs as opposed to using those months as a resting and training period off the ice. By hosting the Top-40 Camp in May, Hockey Manitoba hopes that these young athletes will take advantage of the open summer time frame by allowing themselves to properly rest and build their overall athlete development portfolios with off-ice training and even competing in other sports.

After the Top-40 Camp a short list of U-16 players will be selected to attend a Skills & Conditioning Camp, August 11-14,2011 in Winnipeg, which will coincide with the 2011 High Performance 1 Coach Seminar. The final U-16 Team Manitoba roster is expected to be named in late September, with the Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup taking place October 27-30, 2011. The U-16 program is lead by head coach David Anning (Winnipeg), along with assistant coaches Kevin Blashko (Winnipeg) and Doug Sinclair (Winnipeg).

In the coming weeks Hockey Manitoba will also announce the U-17 & U-18 Female players selected to attend the POE Top-40 Camp.
