NEW THIS SEASON

Ice Times – ZERO 10:40pm & 10:50pm Slots

Since opening in August 2010, the MTS Iceplex has been, and will remain committed to the development of players, and teams in the minor hockey system.  With that in mind, the league and facility are aware of hard late games at 10:50pm can be on players throughout the season.

Over recent months, our management and staff have worked diligently to find a way to make game times easier on the WJHL teams without removing minor hockey groups from the facility.  Through some creative work, and cooperation from various groups we can now say with 100% certainty that there will be ZERO games scheduled for 10:40pm or 10:50pm.  On most nights, the latest game time will be no later than 10:30pm.  The one exception will be on nights in that the Winnipeg Wild of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League and/or the Winnipeg Blues of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League play home games at MTS Iceplex.  Each of those organizations made early contributions to this process by agreeing to move up game times up to 7:00pm starts that were previously 7:30pm dating back to the start of the 2014-15 season.  On those nights, the latest game may be scheduled for 10:35pm in which that would only be on the Winnipeg Free Press rink.

NEW PLAYOFF FORMAT

The WJHL will be moving to a double elimination bracket for playoffs.  This will result in all games having significant meaning, and gives every team an opportunity to work their way into the championship picture.  Below is what a standard eight team division would look like under the new format.  Using this format, game numbers that appear in red would be elimination games.  A second game may be necessary for the division final if the losing has lost for the first time during playoffs.  In the event that the losing team has lost for the second time, there would be no second game necessary.

HOCKEY MANITOBA CUP – AUTOMATIC FREE ENTRY

The WJHL will be awarding four entries into the 2016 Hockey Manitoba Cup.  Division winners within each skill level will playoff for a paid entry into the Hockey Manitoba Cup.  For example, if there are three “C” divisions, the winners of each of those divisions would have a three team playoff for automatic entry to the Hockey Manitoba Cup.  Full scenarios will be outlined in the 2015-16 edition of the WJHL Rule Book.  The Hockey Manitoba Cup is an open tournament in which any team may register.  Players and teams can visit www.hockeymanitoba.ca/cup for full Hockey Manitoba Cup details.

*Depending on number of registered “A” Division teams, this may be five entries.
