The game of hockey provides many teachable moments and some equally valuable life lessons. In addition to the on-ice experiences and enjoyment, Hockey Manitoba and its partners recognize the importance of a strong educational foundation, and each year awards twenty (20) post-secondary scholarships to graduating student member athletes.
In an effort to continue to acknowledge outstanding contributions, Hockey Manitoba has chosen to name many of its scholarships after the following outstanding members to leave a lasting legacy in their honor.
ORVILLE ACRES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP (Female Recipient) – $1,000
The name Orville Acres is synonymous with women’s hockey in Manitoba and throughout Canada. He was a player, coach, official, administrator and promoter who played a major role in the development of hockey throughout the province for over 40 years. Orville Acres devoted a lifetime to promoting, developing, organizing and improving amateur hockey in Manitoba. Orville earned the respect of his peers and was a highly visible member of the women’s hockey program in the province. As a model hockey builder, he touched the lives of many people, guided many gifted athletes, coaches and officials alike. Fairness in sport was his guiding principal. A true ambassador to the sport, Orville Acres exemplified the leadership qualities and has made significant contributions to the advancement of female hockey in Canada.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Raylyn Kosowski
Raylyn is from Dauphin and played this past season for the U18 Grand Plains Female Ice Dogs. She is also a Level 2 official. Raylyn is a bright student who has consistently maintained a high academic standing for her grade level at Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School (DRCSS). Raylyn comes off as truly authentic and is a true role model and leader on and off the ice. Over the past four years, Raylyn has demonstrated her strong work ethic, dedication and positive contributions to her school and the Dauphin community. She has spent many hours volunteering with Regional Connections, Under One Roof, Dauphin and District Food Bank, and the Dauphin Friendship Centre. Raylyn will attend the University of Calgary in the fall of 2024 to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree (Kinesiology).
BILL ADDISON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Originally from Carberry, Manitoba, Addison was the president of the Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association from 1967 – 1970 and served as commissioner of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for more than two decades. He was also a founding member of the Manitoba Sports Federation. Mr. Addison received an award from the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association to recognize his contributions to the growth of amateur hockey and was also presented with a Manitoba Gold Medal for outstanding community service by then Sport Minister Jim Ernst. Bill managed the last Manitoba team to win the Memorial Cup, the Winnipeg Braves hockey team, in 1958 – 1959 and in 1985, Addison was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Rayan Sprott
Rayan is from Boissevain and played this past season for the Boissevain/Souris Broncos. Not only does Rayan possess exceptional skills and talent in hockey, but he also demonstrates a strong commitment to academic excellence and personal growth. He consistently maintains a high level of academic achievement while devoting countless hours to practices and games. Rayan’s commitment to his school and community also shines through in his involvement with high school student government as well as Boissevain Minor Hockey where he has recently volunteered his time as an assistant coach of the U15 team. During his high school career alone, he has participated in baseball, volleyball, and hockey where he was named an alternate captain for the 2023-2024 season. He demonstrates admirable leadership qualities and sportsmanship and is a great role model for his teammates and all aspiring athletes. Rayan will attend the University of Calgary in the fall of 2024 to pursue a Psychology degree.
GEORGE ALLARD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $1,500
Born in The Pas, George was an outstanding goalkeeper during his playing years. He organized and played for Flin Flon Intermediates, the National AA champions in 1965. There he was a player, volunteer coach/manager from 1956 – 1967. He was manager of the Flin Flon Junior Bombers for three years and a scout for the New York Rangers. George served as the Hockey Manitoba Executive Director for three decades. He was also Secretary-Treasurer of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League from 1967 – 1977. Awarded the Hockey Canada Order of Merit in 1985, he also served on committees such as the first World Junior Championships and the Government of Canada Hockey Review. George’s impact on the game in truly difficult to measure.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Paige Fontaine
Paige is from Winnipeg and played this past season for the U18 St. Vital Chill. Paige is a very successful student academically. She was able to maintain high academic excellence throughout her four years at College Jeanne-Sauve, all the while learning two languages. Paige is fluently bilingual and will graduate with a French Immersion diploma. Paige has always been involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities. However, she has also been a role model for others outside of the school as well. For example, she has volunteered her time at the Saint-Boniface General Hospital. She has been a female hockey coach and mentor for younger students and a Minor Hockey evaluator. She is also a lifeguard and swim instructor. Paige plans to attend the University of Manitoba or l’Université de Saint-Boniface beginning in the fall of 2024.
RALPH BORGER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Ralph served 38 years as a Builder and Administrator in Minor and Junior hockey for Hockey Manitoba and Hockey Canada. He also served as a Director of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum and on the Board of Directors of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. He owned and administered the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s St. Boniface Saints Hockey Club for 28 years. Ralph was extremely proud of the positive role and influence it had on the lives of many young men in hockey who went on to successful and fulfilling careers. Ralph was known as the ultimate fundraiser. He raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for minor and junior hockey in Manitoba. He received various awards for his contributions to hockey including being named Volunteer of the Millennium by Hockey Manitoba followed by his induction in 2005 into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame. Ralph was further honored as a Life Member of Hockey Manitoba.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Tanner Kelbert
Tanner is from Winnipeg and played this past season for the U18 AA Winnipeg Twins. Tanner is a positive leader and a great teammate. Tanner was selected to be the co-captain of the U18 AA Twins team this past season and led the team in points in both the regular season and in the playoffs. Tanner is a talented, dedicated and confident member of his classroom. Going into the final semester of Grade 12, Tanner had an overall average of 96% at Linden Christian School. He is well respected by his peers and exhibited consistency and strength of character in his daily interactions with staff and peers. He was actively involved in his school community and one example is his work with the Graduation Committee. Tanner is an exceptional person who combines athletic ability with remarkable character, leadership, and academic excellence. Tanner will attend the University of Manitoba in the fall of 2024 to pursue a Bachelor of Nursing degree.
BOB CALDWELL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Bob played hockey for the University of Brandon before getting heavily involved in the coaching aspect of the game. In his local community of Deloraine, he established a sport development fund in order to subsidize costs and bring instruction to the kids rather than having to send them to other communities. He also operated the on-ice portion of the Breakfast Club twice a week which allows players from U9 to U18 to work on skating and puck handling skills. Bob is the Chair of the Athlete Development Committee for Hockey Manitoba and has been involved with the selection of coaches for Hockey Manitoba’s Provincial teams. In addition, he is Hockey Manitoba’s master mentor and the true driving force behind the branch Coach Mentorship program. He has spent countless hours on and off the ice with young coaches across the province. Bob also serves as Chair of the Coach Advisory Board for Coaching Manitoba. His dedication to improving coaches and coaching tactics has been beneficial not only to our coaching community but also to those players that prosper as a result. Bob’s tireless efforts and hard work have made him an incredible asset to Hockey Manitoba and Hockey Canada.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Parker Rolston
Parker is from Winnipeg and played this past season for the Winnipeg Thrashers U18 AAA. Parker has consistently demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, maintaining marks that placed him on the honor roll with distinction every year that he was enrolled at Collège Churchill High School (CCHS). Parker has demonstrated leadership qualities and a commitment to making a positive impact in the school community by being actively engaged in various extracurricular and community service activities. Parker has utilized his team skills and leadership attained through sport by volunteering with his local hockey community in the form of coaching with the U13 Boys Twins team as well as volunteering as a ref in the local community outdoor tournament on an annual basis. He has volunteered at the Festival du Voyageur every year, representing Collège Churchill High School with enthusiasm and pride. In addition, Parker has made a point of fundraising for both the school graduation ceremonies and the Hockey Academy, which he was a member of for several years. Parker will attend the University of Manitoba in the fall of 2024 to pursue a Science degree.
ALBERT E. HORSEMAH “ABBIE” COO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Abbie was born in Teeswater, Ontario in 1885 and after serving in World War 1, in which he was awarded the Military Cross for bravery, he worked for the Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association for 45 years. From 1918 to 1963 he was on the Executive and served as President from 1924 to 1927. He would act as President again from 1934 to 1937, and once more from 1942 to 1946. He spent fifteen years as an Executive Member, seventeen years as the Secretary-Manager and thirteen years as President. A long-time newspaper executive with the Winnipeg Free Press, Abbie Coo was a fixture in the boardrooms of amateur hockey.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Quinn Sutherland
Quinn is from Winnipeg and played this past season for the St. Mary’s Academy Flames Prep team. Quinn is a dedicated student, who commits time and diligence to her academic studies. During her six years at St. Mary’s Academy, she maintained honours status – a direct reflection of her commitment to excelling in her learning. Teachers describe Quinn as an engaged, active participant who demonstrates a well-developed sense of responsibility to the learning process. Quinn has demonstrated a desire to expand her learning through opportunities beyond the classroom. Quinn participates in school clubs, with a particular interest in the Performing Arts area. Another example would be her acceptance and participation in the FBI Academy during the summer of 2022, allowing her to experience a unique, extended learning opportunity with students from across Canada and the States. Quinn will be furthering her education and hockey at the University of Regina (U-Sport) beginning in September 2024.
TODD DAVISON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $1,000
Todd played the game of hockey with tremendous speed and a big heart, never letting size limit his ability to compete. A feisty forward in the WHL and with the Lloydminster Blazers of the AJHL, he always played the game with intensity. Todd was also assistant captain for Team Manitoba at the 2003 Canada Winter Games in Campbellton – Bathhurst, NB and named Team Manitoba’s honorary captain for the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, YK. He was very well respected by his teammates and achieved success on and off the ice through his hard work, determination and passion for life. In June 2004, two days after graduating from St. Paul’s High School, Todd was diagnosed with Synovial Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. Todd applied his trademark perseverance and limitless spirit not only to his personal battle with cancer, but also to a larger goal, the fight to end cancer. Inspired by the positive attitude and inspirational work of people such as Lyle Bauer and Mario Lemieux who also faced and conquered this dreadful disease, Todd strived to make a difference. Todd lost his fight with cancer in December 2006, but his commitment to make a difference continues to inspire. Hockey Manitoba recognizes Todd’s tremendous, unselfish commitment to the game and has established a scholarship in his name to continue his legacy.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Hannah Reagh
Hannah is from Binscarth and played this past season for the Female U18 AAA Yellowhead Chiefs. Hannah is an excellent leader on and off the ice. She leads by example and is an encouraging role model to her teammates, supporting them and cheering them on. Hannah displays selflessness by being very involved with her community/region both in the hockey world and outside of it. Hannah has volunteered her time with the Yellowhead Junior Chiefs Camp and at CanSkate sessions in a nearby town. She was also the Camp Leader for the Cody McLeod Hockey School. Hannah actively competed in multiple sports in her school. She played on the provincial school golf team as well as the mixed doubles badminton team. She was also on the track and field team and competed in both the 100 and 200 meter races,. She has been a part of the student council and was also awarded a citizenship award for Park West School Division. Hannah will be furthering her education and hockey at the University of Calgary (U-Sport) beginning in September 2024.
R.A. “SAM” FABRO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Born in Udine, Italy, Sam Fabro moved to Winnipeg as a child and played with the 1941 Memorial Cup winning Winnipeg Rangers. He was one of the founders and first Chairman of the Manitoba Hockey Players Foundation in 1967 and was a leader in the creation of the Hockey Hall of Fame & Museum in 1985. Fabro was also a huge influence and instrumental builder in more than just hockey. The Chair of the 1974 Winter and 1978 Summer Games, Fabro was a co-founder of the Manitoba Marathon and Canoeathon and Chair of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. He was President of the Manitoba Baseball Association from 1968 – 1969, Chairman for the Manitoba Games from 1974 – 1978, and vice chairman of the Wildlife Foundation of Manitoba. Ronald A. “Sam” Fabro was admitted to the Order of Canada in 1975. He passed away in 2018.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Mia McGregor
Mia is from Waskada and played this past season for the Female U18 AAA Yellowhead Chiefs. Mia is an exceptional student who consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic, dedication, and commitment to her studies as well as her athletic pursuits. She has been awarded the Proficiency award in grades 9-11 at Waskada School and has been on the Honor Roll in all of these grades as well. In addition to her academic pursuits, Mia has been involved in extra-curricular activities where she demonstrates, commitment, initiative, and a positive attitude. She has been involved in numerous volunteer efforts. In school, Mia has volunteered at BBQs, tutored other students, helped out in lower grades during her spares, and planted trees. She has also volunteered at numerous hockey camps. Her dedication to helping out extends into the community where she has volunteered for BBQs, fundraising, cleaned up community yards, and helped elders cut grass. Mia will attend Red Deer Polytechnic in the fall of 2024 to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree.
JACK FORSYTH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $1,000
From Hartney, Jack was actively involved in the game for over six decades serving the game as a player, coach, official and administrator. He was an educator who served both as a teacher and principal in rural schools across southwestern Manitoba. He helped found the U18 AAA Hockey League and served as the Secretary and President of the South West Hockey League. Jack also served on the Hockey Manitoba Board of Directors for many years, (including President from 2001 – 2004) and on the Hockey Canada Board of Directors from 2001 – 2007; the final three years as the National Chair of Minor Hockey. In 2008, Jack was awarded the Hockey Canada Order of Merit. Jack is recognized as a Life Member of Hockey Manitoba and also served as the Commissioner of the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League for over 20 years. Jack’s determination and dedication to advancing the game will have an impact for generations.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Benjamin Friesen
Benjamin is from Grunthal and played this past season for the U18 Grunthal Red Wings. Ben has truly been an exemplary model of an outstanding student athlete. His work ethic and leadership skills both on and off the ice have earned him the respect of his teammates and coaches. During the season, Benjamin volunteered his time with Grunthal’s Breakfast Club program, helping kids fall in love with the game and providing them with a positive role model. He has maintained a 92 per cent average or higher in each of his last four years at Green Valley School. Benjamin served as president of his student council this past year, leading his team in fundraising events and organizing events for his student body. He also volunteered his time at his local food bank and created his own food donation drive called “Food House” where donors could place groceries in a small box for those in need. Benjamin will attend the University of Manitoba in the fall of 2024 to pursue an Engineering degree.
TRUDY GALLOWAY MEMORIAL BURSARY – $750
This bursary assists a young official who aspires to a post-secondary education within Manitoba. In order to qualify for the bursary, the candidate must have officiated in Manitoba during the past season and have secured a letter of recommendation from both their High School Principal and Referee-in-Chief. Ryan Galloway provides the bursary in honor of his mother, Trudy Galloway. Ryan is a Manitoban who has worked as an official in the MMJHL, MJHL and the WHL. Ryan has officiated in the professional ranks of both the IHL and AHL, and currently works as a linesman for the NHL, having amassed over 1000 games to date. Ryan’s ongoing contributions to Hockey Manitoba’s officiating program are a testament to his integrity, character and professionalism.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Landon Reid
Landon is from Pine Falls and played this past season for the Powerview/Sagkeeng High School Hockey Team. He is also a Level III official. Landon is an academic powerhouse who has been at the top of the Honour Roll throughout his high school career. His impressive 93% overall average has left his classmates breathless fighting for second place in academic standings. In addition to hockey, Landon plays volleyball, badminton, golf, baseball, curling, lacrosse, and runs cross country. He also is an impressive skier and mountain-biker. In all sports, Landon has seen great success, and shines in the role of Team Captain on many teams. Landon is an excellent role model. In school, sports, and the community, he is a leader. As a referee, and member of the hockey community, he recognizes the importance of building a just, fair, safe and respectful community and he guides others in sustaining that. Landon will attend the University of Manitoba in the fall of 2024 to pursue an Engineering degree.
IAN HEATHER SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Ian Heather was referee-in-chief the Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association from 1973 – 1978, the Winnipeg High School League from 1987 – 1994 and the Hockey Manitoba referee-in-chief from 2002 – 2011. Ian also served as the supervisor of officials for the 2003 CIS women’s championship, the 2005 Royal Bank Cup and was heavily involved in the 2002 Under-17 tournament in Stonewall/Selkirk, the 2009 Allan and TELUS Cups in Manitoba and finally the World Under-17 championship in Winnipeg in 2011. Ian played a significant role in the development of current NHL Manitoba officials Rob Martell, Vaughan Rody and Ryan Galloway, and as an instructor and national supervisor, he has also had a hand in guiding other Canadian officials who have achieved success in making it to the NHL. Ian Heather is a member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame, and was the recipient of the Hockey Canada Officiating Award in 2010. Ian is a retired teacher who has since taken on a position in the penalty box crew of the NHL Off-ice Officiating Department for Winnipeg Jets games.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Eros Bazan
Eros is from Winnipeg and played this past season for the St. Paul’s High School Crusaders Hockey Team. Eros’s engagement extends beyond the classroom to a rich involvement in athletics, where he has shown leadership and team spirit. particularly as a member of the St. Paul’s Crusaders Hockey Team. His musical ability as a saxophonist in our school band shows his artistic talent and ability to manage diverse interests. As a student, Eros displays the diligent work ethic that is a hallmark of all his endeavors. He has achieved Honor Roll status in every semester at St Paul’s. His work ethic is evident through his roles at SportChek, as well as in his commitment to community service, including snow shoveling and providing childcare for neighbours. Eros’s dedication to volunteering is notable, with significant contributions to Brightwater Senior Living, Manitoba Harvest. and the Fogolar Association of Winnipeg, among others. These activities demonstrate his commitment to positively impacting our community. Eros will attend the University of Manitoba in the fall of 2024 to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
NICK HILL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $1,000
Nick Hill played minor hockey in Winnipeg’s North End, Junior hockey for the Port Author Bruins, had a short bout with the Boston Bruins organization and ended up playing for Milwaukee in the IHL. Nick returned to Winnipeg and launched a career in sales and founded Kern-Hill Furniture Co-op, coining the phrase “C’mon Down!”. Nick’s passion for the game of hockey was second to none. He coached all levels of hockey in Manitoba. Team and player development was a very important part of his coaching philosophy. He was one of the original founders of AAA hockey in the city, and he felt that Winnipeg needed tiered hockey in order to compete with the larger cities across Canada. Whether it was coaching community club, AAA, Junior or Senior hockey in Manitoba, Nick was a fierce competitor in everything he did. He always made time to assist or advise the many players and coaches he spoke to until the last few days of his life.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Callum Carnegie
Callum is from Winnipeg and played this past season for the U18 AA Winnipeg Twins, serving as team captain. He is also a Level 3 official. With unwavering dedication and hard work, Callum has not only excelled in hockey but he has also been a leader on and off the ice. As a dedicated volunteer within the community, Callum has shown exceptional commitment to developing others, serving as a mentor to aspiring referees, assisting in skill development through the NHL/NHLPA First Shift Program, and providing tutoring in calculus. Callum has also played a meaningful role in minor hockey by volunteering at tryouts, as well as contributing to the success of community event carnivals and jamborees. Beyond hockey, Callum is a talented AA Baseball catcher, demonstrating versatility and athletic ability across multiple sports. Callum will attend the University of Manitoba in the fall of 2024 to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
JERRY KRUK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $1,000
Jerry was a long time member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame Board of Directors prior to losing his battle with cancer in 2012. Jerry played his youth hockey in Winnipeg’s north end and was a member of the last Winnipeg based team to win the Memorial Cup, the 1957 Winnipeg Braves. Jerry went on to graduate from the University of Manitoba with a degree in Engineering. He was a great contributor to the Winnipeg business community through his association with Intercity Gas Company and latterly as the CEO of CAA Manitoba.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Christopher Herman
Christopher is from Winnipeg and played this past season for the St. Paul’s High School hockey team, serving as team captain. Christopher is a high academic achiever and a driven student-athlete. He is an accomplished multi-sport athlete, distinguished in hockey, golf, and volleyball. Considered a leader by his coaches and teammates alike, he is a fierce competitor. He will never back down from a challenge and drags his fellow players into the fight. In the community, Christopher is actively involved in a number of service-oriented endeavors, including: leading a student retreat at St Paul’s, assisting \\ith Student Council events, and volunteering at local middle schools, with Tennis Manitoba, and at Winnipeg Harvest and the Christmas Cheer Board. He has also served as a volunteer coach with the Winman volleyball club and Special Olympics Manitoba. Christopher will attend the University of Manitoba or the University of Winnipeg in the fall of 2024 to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree.
SHELDON LANCHBERY SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Sheldon served as the President of both Hockey Manitoba and Hockey Canada. He was elected to the Chair of the Canadian Hockey Association’s Board of Directors in 2001 and a member since 1994 while serving as a CHA Officer since 1996. He served as the chairman of the Mentorship Committee and was instrumental in the formation and development of the CHA Coach Mentorship program in 2000. Sheldon’s vision, leadership and legal acumen was a guiding light in the adoption of a variety of programs and structure of both branch and national programs. As President of Hockey Manitoba, Lanchbery spearheaded the CHA ‘’Speak Out’ program as the chairman of the Harassment and Abuse Prevention Committee. Sheldon was appointed to her majesty’s Courts of Bench in June 2013 and is a native of Deloraine, Manitoba.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Zenith Vanstone
Zenith is from Miami and played this past season for the U18 AAA Pembina Valley Female Hawks, serving as her team’s assistant captain. Zenith is a talented athlete and an excellent student who maintained a 96% average at Miami School in her Grade 12 year. She is always willing to volunteer her time when asked and does not hesitate to take the lead when it comes to planning in areas that she is passionate about. Zenith is eager to continue to grow as a lifelong learner, and is an excellent role model to other students at her school. Her leadership and passion plays a big role in her community, school and sports world. She is someone who will go above and beyond to help someone out and is a very hard-working individual who is highly respected by everyone around her. Zenith will attend the Olds College of Agriculture and Technology in Alberta where she will play for the Broncos and pursue a Degree in Agricultural Management.
BUCK MATIOWSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Matiowski was a trailblazer for several hockey firsts in Manitoba such as organizing the first-ever provincial women’s hockey tournament in 1955 and founding Western Manitoba’s first summer hockey school in Brandon in 1967. Buck also served as President of the Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association in 1984 – 1985. He coached and operated women’s hockey in the rural communities of Shoal Lake and Bisset and in 1968 wrote a ground breaking report called “Task Force on Hockey Violence” for use by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association. In 1976 he introduced a new plan to divide the province into regions for the organization of amateur hockey, a system that is still used to this day. An author and innovator, Buck’s forward-thinking has left a significant and positive mark on the game in Manitoba and his contribution is both significant, lasting and important in the development of hockey in our Province.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Reese Boguski
Reese is from Dauphin and played this past season for the U18 AAA Yellowhead Chiefs. Reese is an excellent teammate who consistently demonstrates her leadership skills and dedication to her team. Reese is a role model student. This is evident by her high marks (93% average) and her Grade 12 course load at Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School. In addition to playing high level hockey, Reese is a dedicated volunteer. She contributed regularly to school programs and local sporting events this past season. Reese has volunteered her time with the Yellowhead Chiefs Female Fall/Spring camps for three years and has also volunteered at the Parkland Humane Society and Elections Manitoba. Reese has been accepted to Brandon University next fall in the Year 1 Pre-Nursing Program.
JIM STIRLING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – 3 x $500
B.F Lorenzetti is the insurance provider for Hockey Canada and its Branches. One of their objectives is to assist in the funding of young athletes and officials. In an effort to honor the contributions of long serving BFL colleague and friend Jim Stirling who passed away in 2013, BFL Canada has decided to change the name of the BFL Canada Risk and Insurance Scholarship program to the Jim Stirling Scholarship Program donated by BFL Canada.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Jaedys Dancyt
Jaedys is from Lac du Bonnet and played this past season for the U18 Pinawa Panthers. Jaedys is an excellent student who maintained a 95% average in his last two years at Lac Du Bonnet Senior School. He is also a talented athlete and outstanding leader on and off the ice. He has demonstrated a commitment far beyond that of an average teenager. As an alternate captain for the past two years, Jaedys has been one of the most coachable athletes known to go through the program. Jaedys not only enhances the school community, he gives his time and energy to worthwhile community organizations as well. He volunteers at the arena to help with younger players’ practices, with the Lac du Bonnet Ice Fishing Derby, and a local fundraising event for breast cancer. Jaedys will attend the University of Manitoba in the fall of 2024 to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Mackenzie Waddell
Mackenzie is from Grande Pointe and played this past season for the Female U18 AAA Eastman Selects., serving as an assistant captain in her final season. Mackenzie is an exceptional student who consistently maintained excellent grades at College Lorette Collegiate (95% average in her Grade 12 year) . Mackenzie’s diligence, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering work ethic set her apart as a standout student at her school. Mackenzie is a well-rounded athlete. In addition to being a key player on her high school hockey team, she also demonstrated her skills as a member of the Ul8 AAA Female Eastman Selects Team. Mackenzie also participated in badminton, track, and softball. Mackenzie has volunteered her time with the grad committee, school newspaper, and with her school’s hockey academy for younger students. Mackenzie will attend the University of Manitoba in the fall of 2024 to pursue a Mechanical Engineering degree.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Cassidy Bodnaryk
Cassidy Bodnaryk is from Winnipeg and played this past season for the Rink Hockey Academy U18 team. During her time at Shaftesbury High School, she applied herself both in academics and extracurricular and volunteering activities. Cassidy is a natural leader both on and off the ice. Over the past three seasons, she demonstrated leadership skills that made her a leader without a letter on her jersey by guiding, supporting and encouraging her teammates. Cassidy achieved “Honour roll with distinction” status (academic average of 90% or above) in each of grade 9, 10, 11 and 12. Despite her significant level of involvement in academics and hockey, Cassidy found time to volunteer at the Assiniboine Park Zoo, as well as the Rink Training Centre. Cassidy is also involved in the Asper Internship program connected through the Asper School of Business in the University of Manitoba. She will attend the University of Manitoba in the fall of 2024 to pursue a degree in engineering.
W. F. TAYLOR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Born in Campbellford, Ontario, Dr. Taylor was an excellent administrator and one of the pioneer builders of hockey not only in this province, but also in the country. The first organization to deal with the administration and development of hockey in Canada was the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada, which was organized on December 8th, 1886. Over time, other organizations in Canada came into existence and on December 4th, 1914, the first meeting to provide for a national body was held in the Chateau Laurier, Ottawa. The impetus for a national organization came from a group of men in Winnipeg, one of which was Dr. W. F. Taylor, representing the Manitoba Hockey Association. Taylor was selected as the first President for both the national and provincial organizations that governed amateur hockey and planted the seeds for growth and direction of the game in our country over 100 years ago.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Cassidy Lesage
Cassidy is from Ste. Anne and played this past season for the Female U18 AAA Eastman Selects. As a hockey player, Cassidy exhibits unparalleled dedication, skill, and sportsmanship. Her commitment to the game is evident in her relentless work ethic, determination, and continuous pursuit of excellence. In addition to her athletic achievements, Cassidy is an outstanding leader in her academic and extracurricular pursuits (she maintained a 95% average at École Pointe-des-Chênes). What truly sets Cassidy apart is her unwavering integrity, kindness, and genuine concern for others. She consistently goes above and beyond to support her teammates, classmates, and community members, embodying the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and service. Cassidy will attend the University of Manitoba in the fall of 2024 to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce degree
DIANNE WOODS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
From Winnipeg, the daughter of a sporting family, Woods spent years filling volunteer and leadership roles in the hockey world. Dianne served as Executive Director of Hockey Winnipeg for 15 years, and worked tirelessly and unselfishly in order to grow the sport. In what may be one of her most enduring legacies, she long championed creating new hockey opportunities for girls and women. She also helped lead many efforts to make sports more accessible to low-income families, and created a Player Assistance Fund that remains today. Dianne passed away suddenly in 2011 and the Fund was renamed in her honor. A very popular and warm hearted woman, Dianne always championed improvements and opportunities for members and was a trailblazer for the advancement of the game.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: William Banman
William is from Niverville and played this past season for the U18 Niverville Clippers. He has represented the Clipper Ice Sports Association as an all-star player and most recently played on the U18 Rural A team that won a silver medal at the Hockey Manitoba Provincials. William exhibits remarkable diligence and attention to detail in all his endeavors. He approaches each task with conscientiousness and a determination to excel, resulting in a high academic standing (96% average). Beyond his academic achievements, William has been actively involved in various extracurricular activities that showcase his leadership abilities and passion for teamwork. His participation in the Steinbach Regional Secondary School Math Club and the Reach for the Top Team demonstrates his intellectual curiosity and ethical reasoning skills. William has been granted provisional acceptance into the faculty of engineering at the University of Manitoba for the fall of 2024.
HOCKEY MANITOBA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – $750
Each year Hockey Manitoba will award one scholarship in the amount of $750.00 in memorial of those that we lost over the course of the season. This is to recognize them for their long-standing positions with Hockey Manitoba and the significant contributions they made to the betterment of our game.
2023 – 2024 Recipient: Cami Murray
Cami is from Pierson and played this past season for the U18 Female Southwest Stars. She was among the league leaders in points in each of her last three seasons, and served as her team’s captain for the past two seasons. Cami not only excels in the classroom where she maintained a 95% average in Grade 12 at Pierson School, but she also actively engages in extracurricular activities such as helping with the Breakfast Club program once a week and working at the local Co-op. Her involvement in these activities showcases her hard-working nature and her commitment to her responsibilities. Cami is viewed by her peers and teachers as a go-getter who is organized, reliable, and always willing to go above and beyond what is expected of her. Her time on the student council further highlights her excellent leadership skills. Cami will attend Assiniboine Community College in the fall of 2024, where she is enrolled in Business Administration.
