Male U-16

The U16 Program of Excellence is the first step in the Hockey Canada Male Program of Excellence. Athletes who participate in the U16 POE begin to receive the exposure to skills and concepts that are vital for success as the Major Junior, NCAA, USport and National levels. Many athletes from the U16 Program of Excellence go on to success with the U17, U18 and World Junior Teams as a part of the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence.

Eligibility/Selection

  • The program will begin with approximately 100 athletes selected to participate in the U16 POE Spring Selection Camp in later March/early April.
  • Athletes are selected utilizing scouting information from a Western Hockey League scouting pool designated by Hockey Manitoba.
  • Athletes for the 2019 U16 Program of Excellence must be male and been born between Jan 1, 2004 and Dec 31, 2004.
  • For an athlete to be eligible for selection into POE they MUST be a permanent resident of Manitoba and be registered with a sanctioned program within Hockey Manitoba (AAA, AA, A or Sport School) or within another Provincial Branch.

U16 POE Spring Selection Camp

March 29-31, 2019
BellMTS Iceplex
Winnipeg, MB

  • Approximately 100 athletes are selected and sent invitations in March for the U16 POE Spring Selection Camp.
  • Athletes are placed onto teams and participate in Western Hockey League On-ice/Off-ice testing and exhibition games over the course of a weekend.
  • All athletes are provided with a CCM custom tournament uniforms.
  • Evaluation is done throughout the camp by the U16 POE Coaching Staff and scouting pool.
  • Athletes are notified approximately two weeks following the conclusion of the camp regarding selections/releases for the next phase of the program.
  • Released athletes are not provided with a written evaluation following the U16 POE Spring Selection Camp.
U16 POE Top-40 Camp

May 9-12, 2019
Canad Inns/Stride Place
Portage la Prairie, MB

  • Approximately 40 athletes are selected for the U16 POE Top-40 Camp.
  • Athletes are placed onto teams and participate in skills, team meetings, team building and exhibition games over the course of three days.
  • All athletes stay at the Canad Inns Portage la Prairie and Hockey Manitoba coordinate all meals, transportation and accommodations throughout the camp.
  • Evaluation is done throughout the camp by the U16 POE Coaching Staff and scouting pool with input from participating bench coaches.
  • Athletes are notified approximately two weeks following the conclusion of the camp regarding selections/releases for the next phase of the program.
U16 POE August Tech/Tac Camp

August 2019
Winnipeg

  • Approximately 20-23 athletes are selected to participate in the U16 POE August Tech/Tac Camp.
  • The camp consists of tech/tac practices, skills practices, inter squad mini-games and team building.
  • Athletes are responsible for their own accommodations, meals and transportation during the camp.
  • All evaluation at the camp is done by the U16 POE Coaching Staff.
