Coaching staff announced for 2025 Boys U16 Program of Excellence

Hockey Manitoba is excited to announce the coaching staff for the 2025 Boys Under-16 Program of Excellence that will compete at the 2025 WHL Cup in October 2025 in Red Deer, Alberta.

The Boys Under-16 Team Manitoba roster will feature the province’s top male players born in 2010.  The WHL Cup is held each year but is skipped every fourth season when the men’s hockey competition at the Canada Winter Games takes its place.

Leading the 2025 Boys U16 Program of Excellence behind the bench will be Devin Himpe (Dauphin), who is currently the head on-ice instructor for Winnipeg Jets Hockey Development as well as an Assistant Coach with the University of Manitoba Bisons men’s hockey team. This will be Himpe’s first year as Head Coach of U16 Team Manitoba and his fifth year with the program.

Himpe is a certified High Performance 1 Coach/Certified Hockey Canada Skills Coach who has extensive experience working with elite level hockey players. Himpe was an Assistant Coach for Team Manitoba at the 2024 WHL Cup, winning a silver medal, as well as serving as an assistant coach for U16 Team Manitoba at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in Prince Edward Island. Himpe was also the Assistant/Video Coach and bronze medal recipient with Team Canada at the 2019 FISU Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

Himpe will be joined by assistant coaches Christine Bumstead (Winnipeg) and Jeff Borse (Winnipeg). Bumstead is currently an Assistant Coach with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Women’s Hockey Team as well as a performance coach for the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades. This will be Bumstead’s first year with the Boys U16 POE program after serving as Head Coach of the 2024 Women’s U18 Program of Excellence. Bumstead was also the Assistant Coach for U18 Team Manitoba at the 2023 National Women’s U18 Championship. From 2018 to 2021, Bumstead served as an Assistant Coach/Head Coach of the Female U15 AAA Pembina Valley Hawks.

Jeff Borse will be the other Assistant Coach for U16 Team Manitoba and this will be his second year as a coach within the Hockey Manitoba Program of Excellence. Borse was an Assistant Coach for U16 Team Manitoba at the 2023 WHL Cup, winning a gold medal. Borse is currently the Head Coach of the RINK Hockey Academy U17 team. Prior to that, he was the Assistant Coach with the RINK Hockey Academy U15 Prep Team. Before joining the RINK Hockey Academy, Borse spent 5 seasons with Vigier Hockey and 3 years with Jets Hockey Development.

Andy Kollar will be the goalie coach for the 2025 Boys U16 Program of Excellence. Kollar is currently the Head Instructor, Goaltender Development at the Ice Lab goaltending school.

Director of Operations for the Male U16 POE will be Bernie Reichardt.

The 2025 Boys U16 Program of Excellence process will begin with a Top-116 Camp which will be held from April 11 – 13 at Scotiabank hockey for all centre in Winnipeg. Following the Top 116-Camp, the Boys U16 POE Top-40 Camp will take place from May 8-11 in Steinbach at the Southeast Events Centre.

The POE is our high performance program that offers developing athletes who are on track to be elite with the opportunity to represent their province while providing a solid development path to the National and International stages.
