WHEAT KINGS’ MATTHEOS NAMED WHL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Calgary, Alta. – The Western Hockey League announced today that Brandon Wheat Kings forward Stelio Mattheos has been named the WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending December 10, 2017.

Mattheos, who was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the third round, 73rd overall, of the 2017 NHL Draft, recorded nine points (3G-6A) in three games this week as the Wheat Kings extended their winning streak to a season-high eight games.

Wednesday at home against the Regina Pats, Mattheos tallied a goal and three points in a 7-4 victory over the 2018 Mastercard Memorial Cup hosts. In Friday’s 4-3 overtime victory against the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers, Mattheos once again played an important role in the victory with a goal and an assist, earning first star honours for the game. In a battle of hot teams Saturday, the Wheat Kings took care of business thanks to help from Mattheos, who record a goal and four points in a 7-4 victory over the Kelowna Rockets, earning third star honours in his home rink.

Mattheos had an impressive seven even-strength points over the course of the three victories as the Wheat Kings made their way through a five-game home stand. As part of an impressive season, Mattheos is on a four-game points streak at the moment, with 12 points (5G-7A) in that span. He also has points in 12 of his last 13 games. He currently sits eighth in league scoring with 49 points (24G-25A) in 30 games. He sits tied for sixth in the league for goals, leads the league with seven game-winners and is second in the league with 12 power play goals.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound forward from Winnipeg, Man. was originally selected by the Wheat Kings with the first overall selection in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft. Since then, Mattheos has appeared in 150 WHL regular season games, compiling 141 points (64G-77A) with 28 power play goals, 11 game-winners. He’s also appeared in 34 WHL playoff games, scoring 13 points (6G-7A) in that span.

Mattheos and the Wheat Kings are back in action Tuesday, December 12 (7:00 p.m. CST) when the Kamloops Blazers come to Westman Place.
