WINNIPEG – Hockey Manitoba is pleased to announce the U-16 Team Manitoba roster and the 11 Manitoba-born players selected to the U-17 Team West roster. The Team Manitoba squad consists of 20 players and will compete February 10-18th at the 2011 Canada Winter Games in Halifax, NS. Meanwhile Team West is comprised of 22 players and will play December 28th – January 4th at the 2011 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie.
The selection process for both teams is completed through the Hockey Manitoba Program of Excellence (POE) each season.The U-16 program began back in February 2010 with Regional Selection Camps held across the province.The selection process then continued with the POE Spring Tournament, POE Summer Camp, and final selections were decided through scouting this fall. The U-17 process began at the POE Summer Camp and final rosters decisions were also decided through scouting this fall.
The Canada Winter Games are held every four years and will feature the country’s top 1995 born players.Team Manitoba is lead by head coach Troy Leslie (Melita), along with assistant coaches Royce Manary (Winnipeg) and Blaine Boyle (Portage la Prairie). Team Manitoba enters the Canada Winter Games ranked as #2 based on final results from the previous Canada Winter Games (Silver Medalists – Whitehorse 2007).
The World Under-17 Hockey Challenge will feature some of the world’s top 1994 born players from Canada, Czech Republic, Germany, Finland, Slovakia, and United States. Team West is lead by head coach Garth Mitchell (Elkhorn) who will be joined by assistant coaches David Anning (Winnipeg), Bob Beattie (La Ronge), and Kyle McDonald (Regina). Ten of the eleven Manitoba-born players selected to Team West were also on the U-16 Team Manitoba roster last season.
