by Hockey Manitoba  |  November 27, 2012 1:55 pm

Don lives in Brandon, MB with his wife Wendy, son Landon (15) and daughter Olivia (2).

His involvement with Hockey Brandon started when his son’s playing days began. He has since been actively involved in the sport in different capacities including:

  • Team Safety and Team Manager for various teams
  • Committee Chairperson for Hockey Brandon Concussion Awareness Committee. This committee was formed with the purpose of educating coaches, players and parents regarding head injuries and everyone’s role in the proper treatment of the injury. There has been great emphasis by this committee on developing a Hockey Brandon Return to Play (RTP) program designed to ensure that players return to action only when they are physically ready and not at immediate risk of further injury.
  • Executive Member. Don is a past Atom/Peewee Director with his current executive position being 3rd V.P. for Hockey Brandon. In this capacity Don has performed a variety of volunteer duties. He is responsible for the programs implemented by the Ice Allocator and Referee-In-Chief. He is also the executive liaison for the annual Hockey Brandon Tournament of Champions. A large part of Don’s current position is being the liaison with all out-of-region leaguesteams participating in Hockey Brandon as well as any Hockey Brandon teams participating outside of the association. Don believes greatly in having strong relationships with all other regions & associations throughout Hockey Manitoba.

Don would like to acknowledge and thank his family for all the support they provided him throughout his years as a volunteer. He would like to thank the current Hockey Brandon Executive as well as past members he has served with. Each of these people has given up a great deal of their time to ensure the sport’s continued success in Brandon.

Don would also like to send a big thanks to the members of the Concussion Awareness Committee. Hockey Brandon is very fortunate to have people this passionate and committed to the cause, willing to work so hard and volunteer their valuable time.

Finally, Don would most like to thank all the Minor Hockey coaches, managers, players and parents for their continued dedication to such a wonderful sport. He expresses, “Hockey has given our family so many great times and memories but it wouldn’t be possible without everyone’s participation.”

Although Don indicated he can think of many people who are equally or more deserving of this award, he is very grateful to have been recognized for this award.

Hockey Manitoba and Hockey Brandon congratulate Don Wilson as the October 2012 Volunteer of the Month presented by Awards & More.
