MALE HOCKEY ROSTERS RELEASED FOR 2014 MANITOBA GAMES

Manitoba Games 2014WINNIPEG, MB – Hockey Manitoba is pleased to release the rosters for the Male Hockey competition at the 2014 Manitoba Winter Games, March 2-8 in Morden-Stanley-Winkler.  In 2014, and every fourth season, the Manitoba Winter Games will act as the first phase of the Hockey Manitoba Program of Excellence (POE) and replace the POE Spring Tournament.  Both U-16 male and U-18 female programs will use the Manitoba Winter Games to identify players to move on to the second phase for the Program of Excellence being the POE TOP-40 Camp held in May.

Team are made up from eight Sport Manitoba regions which slightly differ from the ten Hockey Manitoba regional boundaries; Central, Eastman, Interlake, Norman, Parkland, Westman, Winnipeg-Blue, Winnipeg-Gold.  The U-16 Program of Excellence and male  Manitoba Winter Games competition will feature the top players born in 1999 vying for a potential spot on the U-16 Team Manitoba roster next season.  Team Manitoba will compete at the 2015 Canada Winter Games to be held in Prince George, BC.

The 2014 Manitoba Winter Games rosters were selected in cooperation between regional coaching staffs and the U-16 Team Manitoba scouting staff.  The Norman roster has been supplemented with players from various regions who have been identified as prospects for the Program of Excellence process.  Male teams will compete in a 2-pool tournament March 2-5, 2014 with the primary hockey venue located in Winkler.  As with the POE Spring Tournament in standard seasons, the Manitoba Winter Games will serve as the last major scouting stop for the Western Hockey League and Manitoba Junior Hockey League in advance of their bantam drafts in May.

The Manitoba Games follow the Olympic cycle, taking place every two years, alternating between summer and winter events and precede the Canada Games by one year.  The program is administered by Sport Manitoba and implemented by the Manitoba Games Council along with the governing Provincial Sport Organizations managing the coordination of their specific sport.  To learn more about the 2014 Manitoba Winter Games please visit www.manitobagames.ca.
