CANADA’S NATIONAL WOMEN’S TEAM ANNOUNCES JANUARY CAMP ROSTER AND CAMP DETAILS

by Hockey Manitoba  |  December 6, 2004 12:12 pm

CALGARY, AB – Canada’s National Women’s Team will hold a January Evaluation Camp at Father David Bauer arena in Calgary, AB from January 22-27, 2005. 24 players have been invited to attend the January camp.

NOTE: There are over 30 players in consideration for Canada’s 2005 World Women’s Championship Team and the 2006 Women’s Olympic team. The January Camp roster is not the final roster for the World Women’s Championship, but rather an opportunity for Canada’s coaching and scouting staff to evaluate players. Players still eligible for Canada’s Women’s Under-22 program will not participate in the January Camp as they will be taking part in the Air Canada Cup in February.

This January camp is the last of four evaluation opportunities for the athletes to showcase their abilities to the Canada’s coaching and scouting staff prior to the 2005 World Women’s Championship in Linkoping, Sweden this April. The National Team held an August camp in Calgary, a Thanksgiving Festival in Kitchener, ON in October, and most recently won gold at the Four Nations Cup held in Lake Placid, NY in mid November.

“We have been very pleased thus far with the level of competition amongst our athletes. Every year it seems to get tougher and tougher as our talent pool continues to grow” said Julie Healy, the Director of Female Hockey.

The Coaching staff for the 2004-05 and 2005-06 National Women’s Team has been very impressed by some of the younger talent coming up from both the Under-18 and Under-22 programs. “The players that participated in the Four Nations for the first time have stepped in nicely”, said Head Coach, Melody Davidson. “As we continue to build towards the 2005 World Championship and the 2006 Winter Olympics we will continue to evaluate and monitor the progress of our players. It is a nice position as a staff to be in when you have choices to make because of our overall depth.”
