2009 TELUS CUP

WINNIPEG – The TELUS CUP Host Committee – Winnipeg Minor Hockey Association (WMHA) and Hockey Manitoba jointly announced today the appointment of Mr. Rob Cox as the Chairman for the 2009 TELUS Cup Committee.

Rob is an avid sportsman and experienced event manager and is looking forward to chairing the top tournament for midget aged players in Canada. His wealth of knowledge and community involvement lends itself to an event of this nature and he’s looking forward to an exciting, memorable and successful tournament. Winnipeg, as host, gains an automatic entry to the event with the games scheduled to be held at the Selkirk Recreational Complex in Selkirk, Manitoba.

“Manitoba has a long history of hosting major events and I am convinced the community will get behind us”, add the newly appointed and enthusiastic Chairman. “Hockey is the number one sport in our country and any time you have an opportunity to host a major event you owe it to the community to do a great job”, continued Cox.

Doug Lischka, President of WMHA added, “This is the top midget tournament in the country and we are excited to be able to bring it to Winnipeg. We have a strong volunteer base and are looking to build on the level of success that some of the most recent events that have been held in Winnipeg”, expressed Lischka.

This is the only the second time the event has been held in Winnipeg, the first was held in the Winnipeg Arena in 1979 and featured 21 year NHL veteran James Patrick and Manitoba Moose General Manager Craig Heisinger.

Hockey Manitoba President Brian Franklin shares the same level of excitement as the other members of the committee. “This is a tremendous opportunity for the players in our branch to showcase their abilities while competing for a National Championship”, offered the first year President.
