Hockey Manitoba Members Approve Modernized Governance Model

by Hockey Manitoba  |  May 5, 2026 2:00 pm

At the 2026 Annual General Meeting, Hockey Manitoba members approved a new governance structure that will guide the organization forward through a transition period over the next year. The changes were supported by a significant majority of members and reflect a shared commitment to strengthening how hockey is supported and delivered across Manitoba. This transition will be implemented in phases, with ongoing input from Members throughout the process, and is grounded in a simple objective:

Building an organization that works for its members, partners, and volunteers — with clarity, consistency, and support for all.

Under the new model:

  • The Board of Directors will focus on governance, oversight, and long-term direction
  • The CEO and staff will lead day-to-day operations and service delivery
  • Committees and advisory groups will provide structured input from across the hockey community

This shift creates:

  • Clearer roles and responsibilities
  • More consistent decision-making across all regions
  • Stronger support for volunteers, associations, and participants

Importantly, local hockey delivery remains unchanged. Minor Hockey Associations and regional leaders will continue to play a critical role in:

  • Delivering programs within their communities
  • Identifying local needs and priorities
  • Providing input into policy and operations

What will change is how that input is gathered and acted on — moving to a more consistent and supported provincial structure. The approved Transitional By-Laws establish a formal transition period through June 1, 2027. During this time, Hockey Manitoba will:

  • Introduce new operational committees and advisory pathways
  • Clarify roles and responsibilities across the system
  • Improve communication, support, and alignment with Members

“This is about building a system that supports the people who support the game,” said CEO Trevor Buhnai. “Our focus is on creating clarity, consistency, and support so that volunteers and associations can focus on what matters most — the players and the experience.”

Members can expect ongoing updates throughout the transition year, including opportunities to provide input and stay engaged as the model is implemented. More information is available at: https://www.hockeymanitoba.ca/governance-review/

Transitional Council Support (2026–27 Season)

As part of the transition to the new governance model, existing councils will remain in place during the 2026–27 season in an advisory capacity. While councils will no longer hold formal voting authority, they will continue to play an important role in supporting communication, gathering input, and assisting with the transition to new operational committees.

To ensure continuity and accountability during this period, members of the Board of Directors have been assigned to work directly with each council:

  • Minor Hockey Council: Daryl Fowler and Kris Klemick
  • Girls’ & Women’s Council: Kathy Valentino
  • Development Council: Jeff Sveinson
  • Junior Council: Kyle Prystupa
  • Senior Council: Brett Chestley

These Board representatives will:

  • Support councils in completing any outstanding work
  • Act as a liaison between councils, staff, and the Board
  • Assist in the transition to future committee structures

This approach ensures that member input continues to be heard and incorporated while the new governance and operational model is being implemented. Further details on committee structures and opportunities for involvement will be shared throughout the coming months.
