Calgary, Alta. –  Western Hockey League Commissioner Ron Robison announced today that Donnie Glennie has joined the WHL Office as WHL Manager, Hockey Operations. In his new role, Glennie will be responsible to lead the WHL player recruitment and development programs.

A 29-year-old native of Winnipeg, Man., Glennie takes over from Kirt Hill (Winnipeg, MB), who recently accepted a position as an amateur scout with the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL following more than three years in the WHL Hockey Operations department.

“I am honoured to have been selected for this role with the Western Hockey League,” Glennie said. “Playing in the WHL provided me with many great memories and I’m excited for the opportunity to be involved in a completely new and different way. I look forward to working with WHL prospects and hockey organizations across Western Canada and the United States.”

In his role, Glennie will be responsible for managing player development and recruitment initiatives across Western Canada and the United States. He will also strive to enhance working relationships with regional governing bodies such as BC Hockey, Hockey Alberta, the Saskatchewan Hockey Association and Hockey Manitoba. Key within Glennie’s role will be coordinating prospect development camps, complete with player/parent information sessions. Finally, he will oversee the WHL Players First services program, which is a vital piece of the WHL player experience.

“We are very pleased to have Donnie join the Western Hockey League staff,” commented WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. “We believe Donnie’s experience as a former WHL player and a recipient of the WHL Scholarship makes him ideally suited to manage our development programs and deliver key messages to young prospects on the benefits of playing in the WHL.”

Glennie is a WHL graduate, having previously played for the Tri-City Americans (2005-06) and Chilliwack Bruins (2006-08) before moving on to access his WHL Scholarship.

Prior to his appointment with the WHL, he earned a degree in Sports Management from Durham College in Oshawa, Ont. From 2015 to 2017, he worked in a variety of roles with Canlan Ice Sports – a North American leader in the development of multipurpose recreation and entertainment facilities.

Along with the addition of Glennie, the WHL Hockey Operations department is pleased to welcome Greg Thomson as Coordinator, Hockey Operations. Thomson joins the WHL Office on a full-time basis after spending the 2016-17 WHL season as Hockey Operations Intern through the Bill Hay Future Leaders Internship Program.
