PICTOU, NS AND PRINCE GEORGE, BC BID TO HOST
CALGARY, ALBERTA – Hockey Canada announced on Tuesday that it has received two bids to host for the 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup, Canada’s National Junior ‘A’ Hockey Championship. The two bids are from Pictou County, Nova Scotia and Prince George, British Columbia.
Hockey Canada has appointed a “Site Selection Committee” to review the bid submissions. The two bid applicants will make presentations to this Committee on March 10, 2005 in Toronto, ON. The Site Selection Committee is comprised of Scott Smith, Hockey Canada’s Vice-President of Business Operations, Marcel Redekop, Hockey Canada Vice-Chairman-at-Large and Paul Lake, representing Hockey Canada’s Junior Hockey Council and the Chair of the Canadian Junior ‘A’ Hockey League (CJAHL).
Following the presentations, the Site Selection Committee will prepare a report and recommendations for Hockey Canada’s Junior Council for review at Hockey Canada’s Annual General Meeting in Saint John, New Brunswick on May 20-23, 2005. Junior Council will then bring forward a report and its recommendation to Hockey Canada’s Board of Directors for consideration at the same meeting. The site for the 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup will be announced following this meeting in May.
“The RBC Royal Bank Cup has grown to become a major event for Junior ‘A’ hockey communities across Canada”, said Scott Smith. “The bids submitted by the two communities of Pictou County and Prince George are of high quality and will make the task of the Site Selection Committee a difficult one. We are confident that the recommended host will continue with the tradition of growing the RBC Royal Bank Cup as a major National Championship.”
The 2005 RBC Royal Bank Cup will be held in Weyburn, SK from May 7-15, 2005 and the Streetsville Derbys Hockey Club in Brampton, ON will host the 2006 Championship.
