Portage falls 5-2 to the Vernon Vipers in second RBC Cup game
CAMROSE, Alta. – Dylan Walchuk scored twice and added an assist to pace the offence as the Vernon Vipers won their second game in as many tries at the 2011 RBC Cup, taking over top spot all by themselves with a 5-2 win over the Portage Terriers on Monday afternoon.
Walchuk had a goal and a helper in the first period as the Vipers outshot Portage 14-1 and took a 3-0 lead to the first intermission en route to their ninth win in 10 preliminary round games, dating back to the 2009 tournament in Victoria, B.C.
David Robinson, Ryan Renz and John Knisley also scored for Vernon (2-0), which has all but locked up asemifinal spot just three days into the tournament.
Tanner Waldvogel and Stephane Pattyn had the goals for Portage (1-1), which outshot Vernon 16-11 over thefinal two periods and pulled to within two goals at one point in the third period.
The Vipers will enjoy a day of rest on Tuesday before facing Wellington on Wednesday afternoon (3:30 p.m.MT), while the Terriers will look to rebound and earn win No. 2 when they face Camrose in Tuesday’s lone game(7:30 p.m. MT).
