Five Manitobans selected in the inaugural Professional Women’s Hockey League Draft

Five Manitoba-born players were among the 90 players selected in the inaugural Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) Draft which was held on Monday September 18th in Toronto.
Ste. Anne’s Jocelyne Larocque was the first Manitoban selected at #2 overall by Toronto. Larocque is a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist who has been a member of Canada’s National Women’s Team since 2008. She made her IIHF Women’s World Championship debut in 2011 and has since won two gold, five silver and one bronze.
Deloraine’s Ashton Bell was the next Manitoban selected at #8 overall by Ottawa. Bell made her Olympic debut at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing where she helped Team Canada win the gold medal. Bell made her debut at the IIHF Women’s World Championship in 2021, winning gold. Bell played five seasons for the NCAA’s University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, registering 118 career points in 164 career games.
Brandon’s Kristen Campbell was the third Manitoban selected at #14 overall by Toronto. Campbell was named to her first Olympic team for Beijing 2022. As the third goaltender for Team Canada, she did not see any game action, but she won a gold medal. Campbell played three seasons for the NCAA’s University of Wisconsin Badgers, winning the 2019 NCAA Championship and a pair of WCHA titles (2018, 2020)
Winnipeg’s Kati Tabin was the fourth Manitoban selected at #30 overall by Montreal. Tabin won the Premier Hockey Federation’s Isobel Cup last season with the Toronto Six. She led all PHF defenders in scoring during the 2022 – 2023 season with four goals and 14 assists in 24 games. She added one goal and three assists in the playoffs.
Elm Creek’s Corinne Schroeder was the fifth Manitoban selected at #33 overall by New York. Schroeder was named the Premier Hockey Federation’s goaltender of the year for the 2022-2023 season, registering 19 wins, seven shutouts and a .955 save percentage for the Boston Pride. She won a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2017 IIHF Women’s World Under-18 Championship.
