Team Manitoba opens with a win at Western Canada U16 Challenge
Game 1: Team Manitoba 4 – Team Saskatchewan 2
Brendan Leipsic scored 1 goal and added an assist to lead Team Manitoba to a 4-2 win over Team Saskatchewan in game 1 of the 2009 Western Canada U-16 Challenge Cup from Blackfalds AB.
Jordyn Boyd opened the scoring for Manitoba 6:38 into the 1st frame, and Brayden Cuthbert added a marker late in the period to give Manitoba a 2-0 lead after 1 period of play.
The second period saw Saskatchewan bounce back with Jared Iron scoring a power play marker 9:53 into the second period. Manitoba regained a two goal advantage with two quick goals 1minute and 3 seconds apart. Sutton Olson scored his first goal of the tournament unassisted and Brendan Leipsic capped off his player of the game performance with a goal 1minute and 3 seconds later.
Saskatchewan scored the only goal of the third period when Tyler Balog scored with only 17 seconds left in the game.
Manitoba will take on Team BC at 4:00pm at Blackfalds multiplex on Friday. Team Saskatchewan will meet Team Alberta at 7:00 in Game two of the Friday night Double header.
